Assignment #2: Transforming the Ordinary (150 points)

Requirements:

Student must use a 6 megapixel (or greater) digital camera, preferably capable of manual exposure adjustments. NO FLASH. Cameras are available for check out in MENH-121. You may want to reserve a camera ahead of time because of the limited amount of cameras available.

 

Objective:

Through point of view, camera operations, composition and color, explore the inherent surreal qualities of the photographic image. Using PhotoshopÕs Adjustment Panel and Adjustment Layers, explore and apply: levels, curves, removing colorcasts, converting color images to grayscale and reducing noise. Using Photoshop, convert or tag images with proper color profiles. Through digital output explore chromogenic (Digital Type-C) printing.

 

Assignment:

Create a variety of Òdream likeÓ or surreal images; images which feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequitur. Use the lecture, magazines, websites or art history books for inspiration. Be conscious of the position of the camera, it should add to the surreal quality of the image. Although you are only turning in 3 images, it is recommended you create multiple images (at least 50) so you have a variety to choose from.

Select three full-frame (no cropping) images you feel best represent the objectives of the assignment. Each selection should represent a unique interpretation of the theme. Make the proper adjustments, i.e., levels, curves, colorcast, color profiles, removing blemishes, etc. Size the images for print media.

 

Print:

Produce six high-quality 8x10 (or larger) chromogenic prints, three prints in color and three prints of the same images in black and white. NO INK-JET PRINTS.
