Assignment:

Picture a scored football field the morning after the big game. Visualize the unclean arena floor after a rock concert or a racetrack after a 5-hour motorcar race. The world is full of scars left by sometimes mysterious and unexplained events. ÒTo live is to leave traces.Ó[1] Like a detective, seek out these scars, photograph them and try to imagine what event took place to create them. Are the traces new or old? Was the event constructive, playful or violent? Is the story obvious or ambiguous?

Next, divorce yourself from thinking of photography as a device for capturing memories. Remember, youÕre a detective and the camera is your device for collecting clues (traces) to countless unsolved mysteries.

Finally, the point to this assignment is to be mysterious and suggestive, ÒMore than Meets the Eye.Ó So donÕt be afraid if the audience canÕt figure out the ÒcauseÓ of the scar. In fact, it might be more interesting if we canÕt determine the cause. Also, donÕt try and connect all your pictures as if they are clues to a single event. Each picture can and should be a stand-alone idea.

Print:

Produce 4 high-quality (300 ppi) 8x10 inkjet color prints

You will turn in:

4 inkjet color prints

25 examples of the assignment (or more), inside a folder labeled, ÒpicturesÓ

PSD files of the pictures selected for printing, inside a folder labeled, ÒprintsÓ

All files should be on a CD, void of any superfluous media

CD should be inside a manila envelope marked with your name and assignment number
